NPS Maturity & Withdrawal Rules

At Age 60 (Normal Retirement)

When you turn 60, your NPS account matures. Here is how your total accumulated corpus gets split:

  • Lumpsum Withdrawal (Max 60%): You can withdraw up to 60% of your total corpus in one go. This amount is completely Tax-Free.
  • Annuity Purchase (Min 40%): You are mandated to use at least 40% of your corpus to buy an Annuity (a regular pension) from an Annuity Service Provider (like LIC, HDFC Life, etc.).

Taxation on Pension

While the 60% lumpsum withdrawal is tax-free, the monthly pension you receive from the annuity is treated as regular income and will be taxable according to your income tax slab in your retirement years.

Early Withdrawal (Before Age 60)

If you wish to exit NPS before turning 60, strict rules apply. You are forced to utilize 80% of the accumulated corpus to buy an annuity, and you can only withdraw 20% as a lumpsum.
